Workshops from Teaching With Primary Sources Across Tennessee

  • March 16, "War of 1812" Workshop at Nashville Public Library from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is being held in conjunction with the War of 1812 Bicentennial Symposium: Tennessee, the Atlantic World, and the War of 1812.   • April 4, Illuminating the Battle of Shiloh: Primary Sources from the Library of Congress Teacher Workshop, Pickwick Landing State Park from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. - This workshop will include lunch, a $50 travel stipend, and educational resources. It is being held in conjunction with Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial 2012 Signature Event: Invasion by Rail and River, http://www.tnvacation.com/civil-war/events/.
  • April 12, Using Maps from the Library of Congress Teacher Workshop, Heritage Center of Murfreesboro from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. - This workshop will include lunch, a $50 travel stipend, and educational resources. Contact Kira Duke, Kira.Duke@mtsu.edu

Opportunity from NCSS to Travel to Peru or Turkey

GEEO and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) are collaborating on two programs in the summer of 2012 to Peru and Turkey. The NCSS wanted to offer a program where their members could travel together at discounted prices. They chose to work with GEEO on these programs because of our shared values, flexibility and innovative post-trip curriculum.

This program is limited to NCSS members and their guests. The program is discounted by an additional $66 for NCSS members.

The Clarice Smith National Teacher Institutes - Smithsonian American Art Museum

July 9–July 13, 2012    OR   July 30–August 3, 2012
 
Be inspired this summer at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as you join colleagues from across the country for an exciting exploration of the connections among American art, technology, and your curricula. Attend one of our week-long institutes in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Stay connected with your newfound colleagues and Museum staff throughout the year.

Core subject teachers for grades 6-12 may apply as individuals or as part of a team. Priority will be given to social studies and English/language arts teachers.
Applications are due Monday, April 2, 2012

Registration Fee: $200 per participant

The HistoryMakers 2nd Annual NEH Summer Institute for School Teachers
African American Political History: From Reconstruction to the Present

Sunday, July 8, 2012 – Friday, August 3, 2012

In a competitive process, teachers from across the country will compete for 25 spots as Summer Scholars. These Summer Scholars will spend the month of July studying the subject of African American Political History: From Reconstruction to the Present. Summer Scholars will also be trained in the disciplines of oral history while having unique access to primary source material. The goal of the Institute is to assist Summer Scholars in becoming "Master Teachers" and in developing curriculum for use in their classrooms.
 
The NEH Institute will focus on four major themes: 1) African American Political Development Pre and Post Civil War; 2) early 20th Century Black Political Strategies, Civil Rights Unionism, and WWII and Cold War Racial Politics; 3) the Civil Rights Movement; and 4) 1970s Black Politics and the New Generation of Black Politicians.
